Hoboken Sinatra Idol Contest crowns a champ
HOBOKEN -- Mario Cruz of Guttenberg was king of the hill and top of the heap on Friday when his rendition of "My Way" earned him first place among 14 competitors in the 7th Annual Hoboken Sinatra Contest.
"I don't try to imitate the man, I just try to sing in his style," said Cruz, 61, who was born in El Salvador and came to the United States in 1980.
"In my opinion, if you don't sing the songs in his style, you lose the feeling," said Cruz who teaches English as a second language in West New York.
Host Gary "Simpsinatra" Simpson, opened the show in Sinatra Park singing "Nice 'n' Easy" to the crowd of hundreds gathered on the banks of the Hudson River. Last year's winner, James Anthony, then took the mike and crooned "Blues in the Night" like Hoboken's own chairman of the board.
The first competitor, Billy Nanni of Binghamton, NY, took the stage at about 7:30 p.m. and sang "The Lady is a Tramp," snapping his fingers and swaying to the music with the Manhattan skyline in the background. When he ended, the crowd burst into applause.
One after another, the contestants thrilled the crowd with songs made famous by Ol' Blue Eyes.
Norman Roy of Canada took the stage wearing a fedora and said, "Us Canadians are crazy. We will go 3,400 miles to sing a song." He gave his own rendition of "The Lady is a Tramp."
"It's a marvelous night here in Hoboken," said Dennis Teza of Newton before singing "Night and Day." After the song he drew laughs from the crowd by saying, "That concludes our show for this evening."
Miguel Angel Vallejo Vizcarra of Mexico sang "Cheek to Cheek" with a slight Spanish accent and threw his fedora into the crowd at the end of the song.
Joe Harkins of Jersey City told about the time he saw Sinatra sing on the steps of Lincoln High School in Jersey City in 1943 before launching into his version of "From This Moment On."
"Frank Sinatra is a big part of Hoboken, he is Hoboken," said Mary Costomaris of 11th Street and Maxwell Place, who has attended every competition since 2008. "I'm definitely a Sinatra fan. My parents were also, so I guess that's why I am. They are really very good, but nobody's like Sinatra"
Sinatra after Sinatra sang into the night.
Others in the contest included Bill Gagliardi of Lakewood, Anthony Kane of Hoboken, Larry Dubin of New York, George Chartofillis of West Caldwell, Rick Valiant of Canada, Joseph DeSarle of New York, James Young of Pennsylvania and Donnie Farraro of Hasbrouck Heights.
Sponsors of the event included Muller Insurance, Carlo's City Hall Bakery, Little Town NJ and Stan's Sports Center.
